I have had the pleasure of serving in the capacity as the Jamaica Diaspora Advisory Board Member for the Southern United States since August 2014 through May 2017. Within this time period, my team and I have collaborated with a wide cross section of the Jamaican Diaspora in and outside of the Southern USA region. During this period I have faithfully, soundly with brutal honesty advised the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade for Jamaica and have adhered to the Terms of Reference as established. I have been afforded the opportunity to perform and collaborate seamlessly over the past 2 ½ under two Jamaican Governments. As a result I have been able to successfully and positively elevate our region’s profile and influence with the Government, Public and Private sectors of Jamaica. Many have now come to realize that there are many areas wherein our region has been already pragmatically participating in the building and growth of Jamaica.
Over the years these areas have included but are not limited to health, education, social programs and public safety in general. Undoubtedly, the effort in these areas by the Diaspora has been well received and is appreciated by the beneficiaries. Equally important however, is our involvement as a Diaspora in policy making decisions whether in Jamaica or within the regions in which we reside. This is where we have made great strides in the past 2½ years. As a Jamaican Diaspora we are now deeply entrenched in policy consultation both with the Government and Private Sector of Jamaica. As examples within the past two years, we now publicly participate and consult in matters such as, the working group of Jamaica’s Economic Growth Counsel, the establishment of the Diaspora Crime Prevention and Intervention Task Force, The Diaspora Immigration and Deportation Task Force, planning as well consultative roles in the Jamaica Diaspora Conferences.
The planning and execution of the Jamaica Diaspora Southern USA Summit 2016 was also very rewarding and productive. Its staging proved to be and excellent conduit for establishing a definitive road map for the further strengthening of the capacity of the Diaspora in addition to the development of formal mechanisms to transfer Diaspora skills and talents to Jamaica. In the last 2 years we have also establish a web site, a Facebook page, email addresses, phone number, post office address for sharing information more easily and efficiently. The privilege to serve and positively contribute to the growth of a nation in any capacity is an opportunity of a lifetime. It is my desire to serve in the position as the Jamaica Diaspora Advisory Board Member of Southern United States, not only to preserve the gains of the giants on whose shoulders we stand, but also to continue to build on the work that is now in full flight. Premised upon my qualifications, expertise and public track record dealing with Diaspora matters, I am confident that I can continue to move us forward to accomplish the long-term goal for our Diasporans.
This is to positively influence our own destiny by participating in the arenas of decision making, not only in Jamaica but also most importantly within the countries we reside. I know that I can continue to be the connective junction and conduit where our like minded Jamaican Diasporans can collaborate and become more galvanized in highly influential areas such as media, clergy- faith base organizations, governmental service, elected offices (politics at every level), academia, and business. I possess the skill sets necessary to continue to enhance and promote our Jamaican culture and values with our second plus generation. I have no doubt that I can continue to strategically position us as Diasporans in this region to be effective with focused precision, externally and internally, exercising positive influence on policies which directly affect Jamaica and Jamaicans.
