The Jamaican Diaspora has for some time now attained the capacity to exhibit a respectable presence and exert a proportionate level of influence in the regions we have chosen to settle. There remains however, an opportunity to consolidate the community into a more functional whole, one that at times, can join in a single chorus or respond more readily to a major cause. Our community is fortunately comprised of a diverse, dynamic, involved and highly successful group of individuals who are active in their host country while maintaining a deep interest in their home country, and who are seeking an opportunity to play a greater role.
The Jamaica Diaspora Boards establish a platform on which to develop the opportunity. The ability to make representation concerning the interest of the Jamaican Diaspora that resides in the Southern USA to the Minister responsible for Diaspora Affairs in the Government of Jamaica is laudable. While this role does not, in any way, overlap nor interferes with the normal role of the local consulate, it complements the efforts to galvanize the community and to encourage their engagement in various aspects of social development both here and in Jamaica.
I have a passion to see further developments in this regard. For over 10 years I have worked in the community as a member of, president and currently Corporate Secretary of the Jamaica United Relief Association (JURA). My service experience has affirmed the abiding patriotic spirit of our people. I am also conscious of the fact that there is real work to be done, and that a more sustainable framework has to be built up to transform that spirit into a deeper and more impactful relationship.
I hold a Bachelor of Laws degree from London University and an MBA in Global Management from the University of Phoenix. I am currently pursuing a doctoral program at St. Thomas University with a view to writing about the Diaspora. I believe my interest, experience, and educational background should serve me well in executing the duties of Diaspora Advisory Board Representative were I to be nominated and elected. It would be my distinct honor and pleasure to serve in this capacity.
